Character Profile 3

Here’s the 3rd in my series of character profiles. Hope you enjoy!

Character Profile 3

Profile 3 characters are (at least as far as I can see) pretty much always girls. The big defining trait for these characters are they all have a dream or a goal. It’s usually big and everyone else tells them it’s impossible, but they keep going and achieve it in the end, despite many, many problems they didn’t count on. “My One Year Adventure Novel” writing curriculum refers to this type of hero as “The Eager Hero” who, as I said above, rushes into the story eagerly without a thought for the dangers that lie ahead. These characters usually play some sort of a main role and even if they don’t, they tend to stand out a lot. They are very extroverted, eager to meet new people and experience new things. If they’re happy about something, the world will know very quickly. Profile 3s also have one other pattern of having a soft spot for animals.

Here are Profile 3 examples:

Jane Penderwick

the_penderwick_sisters_by_spammusubi24-d5hv0n5

Top left: Rosalind. Top right: Batty. Bottom left: Jane. Bottom right: Skye.

Jane Penderwick (bottom left corner) is the third oldest girl in the Penderwicks books by Jeanne Birdsall and is a writer. She seems to have a different dream in each book and throws herself wholeheartedly at that one goal. She likes to explore for the purpose of making up back-stories for the things she finds (for example, her “magic rock” to which she prays and gives her homework as “offerings”). Her older sister, Skye, finds her constant babble about her writings and imaginings unbearable, though the oldest, Rosalind, takes it a bit better. Although she is a very good picture of a writer, please don’t compare me. Jane’s craziness was actually the reason I was hesitant to start my first book. Thought process: “Jane=writer. Me starting to write story=writer. After a while: Me=Jane”. Enough about me. Here’s her trait list:

Jane’s trait list:

Some people find her annoying (Skye among others)

Imaginative

Optimistic

Anna

images

Anna is the main character in the new Disney movie, “Frozen”. She is very adventurous, optimistic and loves people. She actually has two, well, maybe three dreams which she switches back and forth from with almost alarming speed. “Dream 1: Be friends with Elsa again” is quickly abandoned for the idea of true love (Dream 2) which is, in turn abandoned for “Dream 3: Chase Elsa and bring back summer”. That then fails and she just can’t get back to Arundel fast enough to get back to Dream 2. Wow, Anna. Way to keep the action moving. Anyway, she’s very lovable, sweet, loyal and a great character. Here’s her trait list:

Anna Trait list:

Adventurous

Extroverted

Love to explore (particularly dangerous, icy landscapes)

Makes friends easily (a little too easily I might add)

Loves animals (Sven)

Main Character

Some people find her annoying (Kristoff at first)

Very Optimistic

Loves nature

Hyper

Has many big dreams: (see above)

Rapunzel

images-1

Rapunzel is the picture of creativity and artistic-ness, despite being locked in a tower all her life. She loves to explore once she finally gets to, and she does have a soft spot for animals (Pascal and Maximus particularly). Rapunzel definitely has a dream and is very consistent in her goal to achieve it. Finding a new dream is a very big deal for her to the point that she’s scared when she achieves the old dream. But she finds her new dream in a very wonderful form: Flynn. Some Type 2s and 3s clash, but these two couldn’t be a better match.

Adventurous

Extroverted

Loves to explore

Makes friends easily

Loves animals

Main Character

Some people find her annoying (Flynn at first)

Imaginative

Optimistic

Artistic

Loves nature

Hyper

Has a big dream: To see the lanterns in her birthday

Unikitty

images images-2

Unikitty’s most prominent trait, (one that she doesn’t always retain) is her positivity. She is the ruler of Cloud Cuckoo Land where there is no negativity of any kind, so positivity and perkiness is her specialty, though she doesn’t seem to have a very obvious dream besides the story goal. She loves everyone and everything, just so long as they’re happy. But if you get on her bad side, watch out!

AngryKitty

Extroverted

Makes friends easily

Loves animals (she is one)

Some people find them annoying (Batman in particular)

Imaginative

Optimistic (Positive)

Artistic

Hyper

Vanellope Von Schweetz

306358_451349364919027_630909503_n

Vanellope is a spunky little girl from the movie “Wreck-it Ralph” and the game “Sugar Rush” who dreams of being a racer. She has the rather uncontrollable ability to teleport (or “glitch”) places short-range. Being teased about it, she thinks it’s awful, but later finds out she can use it while she’s racing and then refers to it as a superpower. Wreck-it Ralph is her best (and for a while, only) friend, who she pesters constantly even though it’s obvious she really likes him.

Vanellope’s trait list:

Adventurous

Extroverted

Some people Pretty much everyone finds her annoying

Imaginative

Optimistic

Artistic

Very hyper

Has a big dream: being a racer

Clementine

755417

Clementine is the man character in the Clementine series (no way!) by Sara Pennypacker. She has trouble paying attention and claims that she is allergic to sitting still, though she is a genius at math. Her dream is to umm . . . Clementine is constantly coming up with nicknames for her little brother ranging from spinach to bok choy. The books are great and I highly recommend them.

Clementine’s trait list:

Adventurous

Extroverted

Love to explore

Makes friends easily

Loves animals (especially her cat, Moisturizer)

Main Character

Some people find her annoying

Imaginative

Elizabeth “Libby” Norstad

book-freedom-seekers-1-lois-walfrid-johnson

Libby is the main character in Lois Walfrid Johnson’s “Freedom Seekers” series set on a riverboat just before the Civil War. Her dream is to have a “never give up family” after her aunt said she wanted to give up on her. At first, she is in favor of slavery, then after the cabin boy, Caleb, takes her to a slave auction she changes her mind and joins Caleb in helping a slave boy travel the underground railroad.

Libby’s trait list:

Adventurous

Extroverted

Loves to explore

Makes friends easily

Loves animals (especially her Newfoundland, Sampson)

Main Character

Some people find her annoying (Caleb sometimes)

Imaginative

Optimistic

Very artistic (her ability to draw well is a big part of the story)

Loves nature

Has a big dream: a Never Give Up Family

And, my book character:

Riley O’Mally

rileyomally

Riley was my very first book character and is the picture of the word “fiery”. She’s an Irish girl who was captured by Vikings along with her dog, Madigan, and taken as a slave. Her constant dream and goal is to get back home. She has a team of animals, including Madigan, a large dog named Magnus and a giant eagle named Shyloh.

Riley’s trait list:

Adventurous

Loves to explore

Makes friends easily

Loves animals

Main Character

Some people find her annoying (especially the Vikings she is constantly evading)

Imaginative

Optimistic

Loves nature

Hyper

Has a big dream: To get back home

And, that’s all! Who was your favorite? Please comment, vote or both! Thank you!

  1. Ooh, I think Anakin Skywalker sort of fits into this category. Mostly because, when we first meet him, he doesn’t show much of that inner darkness and dreams big. I think that Obi-Wan is, at first, both charmed and irritated by Anakin. 😛

    • Obi-Wan Kenobi is definitely a type one. He’s wryly sarcastic and witty (which sometimes gets him into trouble), very intelligent, was bullied as a child, takes things very seriously (sometimes a bit too seriously), is extremely critical of himself (though not quite to the point that the book version of Horatio is), and though he doesn’t often show emotion his emotions are deep and passionate. He’s also very quiet, is technically the deuterotagonist as well as the mentor character (though he’s my favorite, obviously :-P), and tends to hide his humor and intelligence and tendency to be passionate behind his calm, thoughtful side, stubborn, loyal to an extreme, respectful, cautious, self-sacrificing… I could go on. In the same vein, he’s also not the person you want to cross. Have a go at Anakin or someone else who Obi-Wan is close to, and the consequences will be dire. If he has his faults, it’s because he’s actually pretty used, in my opinion, to getting his own way. Not that he’s necessarily spoiled or anything, but… he normally doesn’t ask for anything. Normally, if he wants something, he subtly argues for it or guides things in that way, but if he puts his foot down then it goes his way. The rest of the world will move before he does. He can also be a bit manipulative and entirely ruthless when the situation warrants it.

  4. If the Doctor didn’t qualify as a Type Four, we could almost slot him in here. X-D At least, we could with Ten.
    Adventurous (no duh, Sherlock! :-P)
    Extroverted (absolutely)
    Love to explore (yup)
Makes friends easily (I’m kind of holding off on this one, but he doesn’t want anyone to leave, ever, and he just sort of can’t help himself. He has this way of sort of non-romantically falling in love with people and inviting them for adventures. :-P)
Loves animals (… horse? Cat? IDK. Apparently the actor is allergic to lots of animals. That makes me so sad.)
Main Character (the show’s NAMED AFTER HIM)
Some people find them annoying (oh, absolutely)
    Imaginative (FLASHBACK CHAIR! X-P)
Optimistic (um, I’ll kind of be hesitant with this one, but at heart, yes. The next incarnation says “I will always be the dreamer of improbable dreams” or something like that.)
Artistic (he draws, really well, though he claims he can’t, and it’s semi-canon that he wrote a piece of music and conducted an orchestra.)
Loves nature (I’ll get back to you on this one…)
    Hyper (TIMES TWENTY MILLION!)
Has a big dream: (just wants to see the universe, I think.)

          • Only that incarnation of the Doctor, though, I think. And he does have a terrifying dark side at times. (Tennant does an AMAZING job as the Doctor and I really miss him 😦 )

          • Okay. Actually, I was thinking about doing a funny one with the Eighth Doctor and Casceny stowing away on the TARDIS. So we get to hear Paul McGann’s epic bellow of annoyance 😛

          • YESSSSSSS X-D
All right! Casceny is about to become the most annoying obstreperous Time Lord candidate out there! Except for the Doctor himself, of course. 😉 I’ll bet he was a holy terror at school. X-D

          • Very true X-D But we still love his perfect bellow 😛
((Is it weird that while other fangirls are in love with the actors’ looks, we’re in love with their voices??? 😛 ))

          • Have you ever heard of the game “pirates at ocean’s edge”? Discontinued trading game, so I’d guess not. But, anyway. It’s a bunch of teeny model ships trying to get gold coins and shoot each other by rolling dice. Crew can improve the ship’s abilities.
All that to say we made our own Horatio Hornblower Crew. You can fire extra cannons if you have Bush. And Simpson you only pick up by accident, but he disables the Archie crew member. XD
            ((No, it’s not weird at all… Well, maybe a little… :P))

          • It’s pretty fun. I only have one ship at the moment, and trying to work around the aspect that it doesn’t take British crew.
Pirates at ocean’s edge is a bit of a mouthful… so we just call it “ships”.
Squink tried to make the Renown out of a Quaker Oats box and half of the guy’s face was on the back. One of my brothers asked if it was Captain Sawyer and I burst out laughing. XD

          • OH MY GOODNESS. X-D That is the FUNNIEST THING I HAVE HEARD FOREVER. Also my grammar is off because too much sugar+caffeine and precious little actual food.

          • I know! XD I will never see Quaker Oatmeal the same again.XP
Not that the internet in general will bust you on a little grammar slip up… 😛

Any thoughts?
